Cultivating sage vision

Although I'm primarily a writer, I have to agree that a picture is sometimes worth a thousand words. I started getting serious about photography in order to illustrate my own articles. I find that I must take dozens or even hundreds of photographs to get a few good ones. It's very challenging, but satisfying.

bloodroot One of my favorites is this simple close-up of bloodroot I took in Peg McGowan 's woodland garden. The colors of the buds and unfurling petals are exquisite.

rosesIn February 2006, Alabama Gardener published this photograph from "A Rose Garden 'Parr' Excellence" on its cover. Other photographs are included with my articles.

I was honored to win first place in Alabama Media Professionals' 2006 Communications Contest, Photographer-Writer Category, for "The Bo'Nana'cal Garden: A place for nature and nurturing."
